The Story
Where This
Work Comes From
Nomveliso's journey with young people began long before Mayine had a name. For over three decades, she has worked across community theatre, drama, sports, and coaching — always with the same conviction: that young people do not need to be fixed. They need to be remembered.
Before founding Mayine, she spent six years at the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation in candidate selection and programme design — work that deepened her understanding of what it takes to identify, nurture, and develop potential in young Africans. That experience, combined with thirty years of hands-on work with young people and families, became the foundation on which Mayine was built.
Mayine Development Institute was formally founded in 2015 and launched its certification track in 2019. Today it operates as a full methodology ecosystem — spanning coaching, retreats, certification, digital programmes, and a licensed associate network — all grounded in the same philosophy that has guided Nomveliso's work from the beginning.
The Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ methodology is trademarked in four countries: South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and the United States. It is not borrowed from Western coaching frameworks. It is an original body of work — built in Africa, for African young people, from African intelligence.
The Institute
Mayine Development
Institute
Mayine Development Institute (Pty) Ltd is the home of the Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ methodology. We work with young people, their parents, and the professionals who serve them — through coaching, retreats, digital programmes, and a practitioner certification ecosystem.
Our name, Mayine, carries intention. Everything we do is oriented towards growth that is rooted — not performance that is borrowed. We do not measure success in grades or outcomes alone. We measure it in the quality of the identity a young person carries into the rest of their life.
Our programmes span pre-teens through to young adults, and include a dedicated parent-facing track — because we understand that a young person cannot be developed in isolation from the family system that shaped them.
We are based in East London, Eastern Cape, and operate nationally through our licensed associate network, with retreats in East London and Johannesburg and digital programmes accessible across Africa and beyond.
Coaching & Retreats
One-on-one coaching, group coaching, and three annual residential retreats — the most intensive entry point into the Mayine ecosystem
Certification Ecosystem
Three practitioner certification tracks — CIAT™, CIPC™, and ICA™ — for coaches, parents, and career practitioners working within the methodology
Digital Programmes
Self-paced courses on Mayine Indigenous Academy (Teachable) and digital products through the Payhip store — accessible to young people across Africa
Licensed Associate Network
A growing network of licensed Teencoaching™ practitioners operating across South Africa under the Mayine methodology and trademark framework
Our Philosophy &
Approach
Everything we do is grounded in a single conviction: that identity is the foundation of everything else. Academic performance, emotional health, career direction, family relationships — all of it flows from how clearly a young person knows who they are.
Our baNtu-rooted methodology does not borrow from Western coaching models. It draws from African intelligence, ancestral knowing, and the lived reality of young people navigating adolescence in a complex, rapidly changing world.
Indigenous Intelligence First
We do not adapt Western frameworks for African young people. We build from African ways of knowing — placing indigenous intelligence at the centre, not the margins, of development work
Identity Before Performance
We work at the identity level first. When a young person knows who they are, academic performance, good decisions, and emotional health follow naturally — not the other way around
The Family is Part of the Work
Every behaviour has root causes. Every child belongs to a family. Every family has its own development patterns. We work with the whole system — not just the young person in isolation
Informal Education as a Feeder
Our mission is to use coaching and informal education to promote self-awareness and personal responsibility — so that young people become conscious, purposeful feeders into formal education and society
Our Holistic Focus
What We Build in
Every Young Person
Our approach ensures that young people do not only achieve success — they sustain it, with a strong foundation of emotional intelligence, intellectual growth, and identity anchoring that stays with them for life.
Mindset of Academic Excellence
Building a growth mindset, discipline, and the internal belief that excellence is not only possible — it is deserved. We go beyond study skills to the identity beneath them
Family Dynamics & Decision-Making
Understanding how family patterns shape confidence, choices, and futures — and building the awareness to work with those patterns rather than be controlled by them
Informed Decision-Making
Empowering young people to navigate identity, career, relationships, and values from a grounded internal compass — not external pressure or confusion
Emotional & Mental Wellbeing
Developmentally appropriate emotional support at every life stage — from pre-teen through to young adulthood — including tools for self-regulation and resilience
Work Ethic, Talent & Purpose
Guiding young people to understand that success is built on discipline and purpose — not just talent — and helping them build evidence of who they are becoming
Self-Leadership & Personal Responsibility
Developing the capacity to lead one's own life with intention — to be the driver of one's own development rather than a passenger in it
Core Programme
Mindset of Academic
Excellence™
The MAE™ is not a tutoring programme. It is a coaching methodology that builds the inner architecture from which academic performance, self-leadership, and identity emerge — applied across five distinct phases, each with its own season and focus.
Phase One
Pre-Teen
Gr 5 – 7
Ages 10 – 13
The Foundation Season
High School Readiness
Before high school demands set in, we build identity, self-awareness, and the internal frameworks that will carry a young person through every academic and social challenge ahead. Structured leadership and emotional intelligence are introduced here — not as concepts, but as lived practice.
Phase Two
Early Teen
Gr 8 – 9
Ages 13 – 15
The Settling Season
Structured Independence
High school is no longer new — and the real work begins. This phase builds structured, self-reliant academic habits while opening the first conversations around subject choices, career curiosity, and what it means to lead your own learning. The young person begins to understand academics as a tool they choose, not a system they survive.
Phase Three
Senior Teen
Gr 10 – 11
Ages 16 – 17
The Building Season
Tertiary Readiness
Academic performance, the Experience Model™, and the deliberate construction of a profile that speaks beyond marks. Career direction becomes concrete. The young person is coached to think about who they are becoming — and to begin building evidence of that identity in everything they do.
Phase Four · Distinct
Matric
Gr 12
Distinct Programme
A Season of Its Own
Finishing Strong
Grade 12 is its own season entirely. This is not about building new foundations — it is about anchoring what is already there and crossing the finish line with focus, identity intact, and results that reflect who this young person truly is. A distinct coaching approach, designed specifically for the final year of high school.
Phase Five
Post-Matric
First Year
Ages 18 – 19
The Threshold Season
Navigating the Transition
The shift from high school to campus life is one of the most disorienting transitions a young person faces — new environment, new freedom, new academic expectations, and no one checking in. This phase supports first-year students in carrying their identity and self-leadership practices into higher education, so that the transition strengthens rather than fractures who they are becoming. Academic confidence, campus navigation, and the ability to self-regulate without external structure are the focus — grounded, as always, in indigenous intelligence.
The MAE™ is delivered across individual coaching, group coaching, and retreat formats. View full Programmes Overview →
