Before adolescence
arrives — build the
foundation first.

Most teenagers arrive at high school without the emotional and identity tools they need to navigate it. Not because they are incapable — because no one built those tools with them before they needed them. This retreat does that work. Before the storm. When patterns are still forming. When the investment returns the most.

Why This Retreat Exists

The most strategic window.

Grade 5, 6, and 7 is the last season before everything accelerates. A child at this stage is aware enough to feel the weight of expectation — at home, at school, in their friendships — but young enough that the patterns they are developing are still malleable.

This is the window. Not to fix anything — there is nothing broken. But to give a child the internal tools, the self-knowledge, and the emotional vocabulary they will need when adolescence arrives fully. When we do this work now, teenagers do not encounter high school unprepared. They arrive grounded.

The Pre-Teens Retreat™ is also the only Mayine retreat that runs with a mixed gender cohort. At this developmental stage, girls and boys can share the retreat space. Their emotional experience, while beginning to diverge, is still close enough that a mixed group produces rich, natural conversation — and the work of identity anchoring is equally relevant to both.

High School Readiness
We build the emotional and identity foundation that will serve your child throughout high school — before they need it under pressure. Relational intelligence, self-awareness, and the capacity to ask for help before it becomes urgent.
Identity Before Peer Pressure
A child who knows who they are before peer pressure intensifies is significantly more resistant to it. The retreat anchors identity at the root level — so that when external voices compete for that space, your child already has their own.
Emotional Vocabulary
Pre-teens feel deeply but often lack the language to name what they are experiencing. This retreat builds that vocabulary — so your child can communicate what is happening inside them, rather than acting it out.
Relationship With Difference
High school will expose your child to difference — in background, belief, experience. This retreat teaches them how to hold their own identity while genuinely respecting others. Ubuntu in practice, not just in theory.
What We Work On

Six focus areas. Three days.

The five pillars of the Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ methodology are woven through every session, every activity, and every conversation. These six focus areas are where that methodology lands for pre-teens specifically.

01
Identity & Roots
Who am I? Where do I come from? What do I carry that is worth keeping? Cultural grounding, Ubuntu philosophy, and the family system — explored at a level that is age-appropriate and genuinely engaging for a pre-teen.
02
Emotional Wellbeing
Naming what you feel. Managing what you feel. Communicating what you feel without it becoming an explosion or a withdrawal. Emotional intelligence tracked and developed at the pre-teen level — personalised to each participant.
03
High School Readiness
What high school actually asks of a teenager — emotionally, socially, academically. This is not exam preparation. It is readiness from the inside out. What it means to belong in a new environment without losing yourself in the process.
04
Relationships & Peer Dynamics
How to choose friends. How to navigate conflict. How to know when a relationship is life-giving and when it is draining. The personalised value of relationships — and how to protect yours without cutting yourself off from community.
05
Family Dynamics
Understanding your family — its strengths, its challenges, its communication patterns — so that home becomes a resource rather than a complication. This work makes pre-teens better at being in their own families, which is some of the most important work this age allows.
06
Self-Leadership Foundations
The habits, the values, and the self-knowledge that make a teenager capable of leading themselves — before anyone asks them to lead others. Responsibility. Self-discipline. Knowing who you are when no one is watching.
The Methodology

Five pillars. One foundation.

The Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ methodology is ICF CCE-accredited and grounded in five pillars — applied here at the age, stage, and developmental reality of Grades 5–7.

01
Emotional Intelligence
Self-awareness, emotional resilience, and the ability to navigate pressure with steadiness. At the pre-teen level, this is about naming and vocabulary first — then management.
02
Intellectual Growth
Mindset, academic confidence, and the belief that effort produces results. For pre-teens, this includes the transition to a new academic environment and what it means to thrive there.
03
Indigenous Cultural Identity
Knowing who you are and where you come from — so you can move through the world without losing yourself. At this age, this is where the deepest patterns are still being laid.
04
Family Dynamics
Understanding the family system and your place within it. For pre-teens, this includes the shift in relationships as they begin to develop more independence — and how to navigate that with both the family and themselves.
05
Self-Leadership Excellence
Accountability, values, and the early foundations of self-directed behaviour. This is the seed of everything that comes later — planted here, at exactly the right time.
