Coach from the roots. Develop from identity.

Become a certified Teencoach™ and learn to walk alongside teenagers as they discover who they are, what they are capable of and who they are becoming, through an indigenous-based approach to human development.

Begin with our 12-month foundation certification, then choose whether to extend your practice into parenting or career coaching.

Why this work matters

Why coaching teenagers matters

When a teenager says “I want better marks,” they are rarely talking about marks. They are asking whether they are enough.

Behind the grades, the silence, the attitude and the withdrawal, there is usually a young person trying to work out who they are and whether they will measure up. Adolescence is when identity, self-belief and the habits of a lifetime are still being formed. What a teenager comes to believe about themselves in these years often travels with them into adulthood.

Most teenagers will not ask for help. Many will not say to the people raising them that they are struggling, because no one wants to disappoint the people who love them most. Parents carry the relationship, teachers carry the curriculum, and too often no one carries the young person’s own growth.

Many of the adults who sit in coaching rooms today are still working through what no one helped them with as teenagers: a fragile sense of identity, the quiet belief that they are not enough, patterns formed when no one was there to walk alongside them. Coaching teenagers meets that need while it is still forming, rather than decades later.

A Teencoach™ stands in that space. Not as a parent, a teacher or a therapist, but as a trained, ethical and consistent presence who helps a young person take ownership of their own becoming, and acts as a bridge between teen and parent.

Every teenager deserves a success team. The need is far greater than the number of people trained to meet it. This certification exists to prepare more of those people, grounded in identity, culture and responsible practice.

Our methodology

an indigenous-based approach to human development

At Mayine Development Institute, we understand human development as a process shaped by identity, relationships, family dynamics, emotional intelligence, intellectual growth and a person’s relationship with their wider community. Our indigenous-based approach draws on indigenous knowledge systems and ways of understanding human development to inform how we coach, how we understand the individual, and how we support meaningful growth.

Through Identity-Anchored Teencoaching™, we move beyond responding only to a young person’s immediate challenges. We seek to understand the person within their broader context, helping them develop self-awareness, strengthen their sense of identity, build emotional intelligence and take greater ownership of their growth.

We do not teach indigenous knowledge as a standalone subject. Indigenous knowledge systems inform how we understand people and approach human development.

Before you apply

Is this pathway right for you?

This professional pathway calls for reflection, practice, ethical responsibility and continued learning.

This is for you if…

  • You want to support preteens and teenagers through purposeful coaching rather than simply giving advice.
  • You are willing to develop your emotional intelligence and reflect on your own practice.
  • You take confidentiality, safeguarding and the responsibilities of working with minors seriously.
  • You can commit to learning, practical work, assessment and supervision.
  • You want to build a thoughtful, sustainable coaching practice.

This pathway may not be suitable for you if…

  • You want a quick qualification without sustained learning and practice.
  • You prefer to lecture or direct young people rather than learn how to coach them.
  • You are unwilling to engage with feedback, supervision, ethics or safeguarding.
  • You cannot commit to attendance, assessments and practical requirements.
  • You expect certification to automatically grant a licence, guarantee clients or promise income.
From certification to practice

You will not start from a blank page.

Mayine’s certification combines coaching methodology with ready-made resources and supervised practice, so you can move into coaching with direction rather than working out every session on your own.

Made-for-You Programs & Coaching Plans Library

A comprehensive library of structured programmes, coaching-plan topics and practical delivery resources, covering identity and self-awareness, emotional intelligence, academic excellence, family dynamics, resilience, leadership, career exploration and work readiness. You know what to coach on, and how, from your first client.

Available during certification; continued use is provided through the licence and MaGICA™ membership.

Practical coaching readiness

Learning is connected to real practice from early in the programme: supervised coaching with teen clients, documentation, assessment and compulsory monthly supervision, so you build professional judgement alongside your skills.

The Business of Coaching

Your passion changes lives. Your business keeps that work going.

Most people come to coaching because they care deeply about people and transformation. That heart is essential. But the moment you take on your first client, you are also running a business, and running a business asks for different things from you.

A coaching practice needs clients who find you, services that are clearly defined, prices you can stand behind, records that are kept, invoices that are followed up and a schedule you honour. It needs you to market your work, protect your boundaries and keep showing up when no one is watching.

Any income potential depends on exactly that. Income is not automatic and it is not guaranteed. It grows when a coach knows how to run their practice and shows up in it consistently: marketing their services, building relationships and replacing clients as programmes end.

This is why the Business of Coaching is a core part of the CIAT™ certification, not an optional extra. It runs across the 12 months, so you finish ready to coach and ready to build a practice that lasts.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for CIAT™?

Applicants aged 25 and above are preferred, although younger applicants may be considered individually. Matric or an equivalent qualification is the general benchmark, and experience working with teenagers is an advantage rather than a requirement.

Do I need a previous coaching qualification?

No. CIAT™ has no prerequisite. All applicants complete the admissions process.

Do I need a university degree?

Not for CIAT™. For the CIAC™ career specialisation, an undergraduate qualification is the standard expectation, with individual consideration for applicants with substantial relevant experience.

Is the programme ICF accredited?

The programme is approved for ICF Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units. Our ICF Level 1 application is in progress.

Will I coach real clients during training?

Yes. Supervised practice with teen clients is a core part of CIAT™, supported by compulsory monthly supervision. The Information Guide explains the practicum requirements in full.

What is the Made-for-You Programs & Coaching Plans Library?

A library of structured programmes, coaching-plan topics and delivery resources that helps you plan purposeful sessions from your first client. It is available during certification, and continued use is provided through the licence and MaGICA™ membership.

Is the Business of Coaching included?

Yes. It is a core part of CIAT™ and is included in your tuition. It is not an additional charge.

Does certification make me a licensed associate?

No. Certification and licensing are separate. The Information Guide explains the licensing pathway and what it includes.

Will Mayine provide me with clients, and is income guaranteed?

Neither clients nor income are guaranteed. Referrals may be available to approved licensed associates, but a coaching practice grows through your own marketing, consistency and the way you show up in your business.

Are partial scholarships available?

A limited number of partial scholarship places are available each year, by application. Ask about eligibility when you apply.

Can I train one-to-one instead of joining a cohort?

Yes. Founder Access offers one-to-one training with Nomveliso Mbanga for applicants who cannot wait for a scheduled intake or international applicants who prefer individual training. Details are in the Information Guide.

What is your refund policy?

Our refund and transfer policy is set out in the Information Guide, and is confirmed in writing at enrolment.
