Before My Coaching Session
Grade 9 · Subject Choice Pre-Session Workbook
Five short sections. About 20 minutes. No right answers — just honest ones. Bring this to your coaching session.
Before you start: Open this page in Chrome or Safari, not inside WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook. That way your answers save properly and you can keep a copy on your phone.
Tap the ⋮ or share icon at the top or bottom of the screen and choose “Open in Chrome”, “Open in Safari” or “Open in browser”.
Your earlier answers are saved on this device — you'll pick up where you left off.
Before we talk about subjects — let's talk about you. These three questions often tell us more about what you should study than any careers list. Take your time.
⏱ About 8 minutes
There are no wrong answers. Write whatever is actually true — not what sounds impressive.
"Something I do where I completely lose track of time — where it feels effortless — is…"
"A moment where I genuinely felt capable and alive — and what I was doing was…"
"Not what I want to achieve — but the kind of person I want to be known as is…"
Section 2 of 5
My Family's Career Story
Your family carries knowledge and patterns about work — even if no one has ever talked about it directly. What you know is enough.
⏱ About 5 minutes
"The careers, trades, or callings that exist in my family — grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, community figures — are…"
"The career expectations I feel from my family — spoken or unspoken — are… and how that feels for me is…"
If you don't know much about your family's history — that's okay. Write what you do know. Even fragments are useful.
Section 3 of 5
Careers I'm Curious About
Name three careers you're genuinely curious about. They don't have to be decided or realistic — just honest. Your coach will use these to help you explore them in your session.
⏱ About 3 minutes
This is not a commitment. It is a starting point. Give yourself permission to name something that might surprise you.
"The one I'd be most embarrassed to say out loud — because it feels too big or too different — is… and the reason it keeps coming back is…"
Section 4 of 5
Maths — Honestly
This is the question most teenagers don't answer truthfully because it feels like admitting something. You don't need to have a good answer. You just need an honest one.
⏱ About 3 minutes
Your coach is not going to judge you for what you write here. This is information, not a verdict.
"My honest relationship with Maths right now is… The main reason I'm considering [Pure Maths / Maths Literacy] is…"
Section 5 of 5
Where I'm Currently Leaning
This is where you are right now — before the session. It might change after. That's completely fine. Write what's true today.
⏱ About 3 minutes
"The subject combination I'm currently thinking about is…"
"The main reason I'm leaning this way is…"
"The one thing I most want my coach to help me figure out in our session is…"
