Grade 9 · Personalised Coaching · Three Sessions
Not just choosing subjects.
Understanding the teenager first.
Grade 9 Subject Choices Decision Programme™
Choosing Grade 10 subjects shapes more than a timetable. It influences university eligibility, career possibilities, bursary access — and, perhaps most importantly, your teenager's confidence in the years ahead.
This is not career guidance. It is a structured coaching process — built on the Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ methodology — that begins with identity before any subject or career is discussed. Rather than telling teenagers what to choose, we coach them to understand why their choices matter.
The three-phase journey
A decision-making process,
not a once-off consultation.
Many teenagers choose subjects based on what their friends are choosing, what feels easier, or what someone else expects. This programme starts where it should — with the teenager themselves.
Who your teenager is — before any subject is mentioned.
Every meaningful decision starts with self-knowledge. In this first session, your teenager begins understanding themselves in ways they often have never been asked about before. We explore strengths, personality, academic patterns, and the family context that shapes how they see the world.
- Personal strengths, natural abilities, and what genuinely interests them
- How their personality connects to learning and future possibilities
- What their academic history reveals — beyond the marks themselves
- The role their family story plays in how they approach decisions
↳ Reflection continues at home with family before the next session.
Connecting identity with real future possibilities.
Once we understand the teenager, we begin exploring careers — not emotionally, but with real information. This session includes the honest conversation about Mathematics that most families find difficult to have on their own, held carefully and without pressure.
- Traditional and emerging career paths explored — with realistic entry requirements
- University and TVET pathways, and what each actually requires
- A structured, honest conversation about Mathematics and Science decisions
- Career possibilities mapped against who the teenager discovered themselves to be in Session 1
↳ Further reflection and a family conversation take place before the final session.
Informed choices, made with clarity and confidence.
Only after identity, exploration, and reflection does the decision-making begin. This final session challenges comfortable assumptions, names any patterns worth examining, and arrives at subject choices your teenager can stand behind — and explain.
- Reviewing what emerged from both reflection cycles
- Honest examination of any choices driven by comfort or external pressure rather than fit
- Finalising subject recommendations and Top 3 Career Pathways
- Building an academic action plan for Grade 10 and beyond
- Handing the Subject Choices Decision Portfolio to your teenager
- Parent guidance resources handed over at the close

Is this right for your teenager?
This programme is built for teenagers who need more than a single conversation can hold.
Your teenager doesn't yet know what they're drawn to — or has a sense of it but can't connect it to anything practical. They need space to understand themselves before any subject choice makes sense.
There's a subject that carries real weight — usually Mathematics — and their feelings about it are tangled with fear, comparison, or expectation. That conversation needs someone outside the family to hold it well.
Your teenager is receiving conflicting advice from friends, teachers, and family. They need a structured process that helps them find their own clarity rather than simply choosing what's loudest.
There's a family dimension to this decision that feels complicated — expectations, pressure, or a conversation that hasn't happened yet. This programme creates that space deliberately, between sessions.
Your teenager tends to open up privately rather than in a group. They'll share more, go deeper, and arrive at something more genuine in a one-on-one setting than in a room full of peers.
Why parents choose this programme
What parents thought they needed —
and what they actually found.
"We thought we needed help choosing subjects."
What they actually needed was confidence that their teenager understood themselves before making one of the biggest academic decisions of high school. That is exactly what this programme is designed to provide.
The outcome of the Grade 9 Subject Choices Decision Programme™ is not simply a list of subjects. It is a teenager who understands why they are choosing them — and a parent who has been part of that process from the beginning.
