Live Observation Checklist

Use these to go deeper than the parent's short self-assessment. Type notes as you go.

About the Teenager
Academic standing — recent results, and any shifts you've noticed?
How would you describe your teen's personality?
What is your teen genuinely good at, or drawn to?
What's their social life like — friendships, where they fit in?
What's the challenge you're most concerned about right now?
Has your teen been told about coaching? How did they respond?
Family & Home Context
Who's in the home? (family structure)
How would you describe the home environment right now?
Anything about cultural, heritage, or community context worth understanding?
How are decisions generally made, and how is your teen parented day to day?
Any previous support — counselling, mentorship, assessments?
Goals
If coaching goes well, what would success look like in about 12 months?
Any specific questions or hesitations about the process?
Coach Reflections — Parent Conversation
Overall impression of this teen, based on what the parent shared
What stands out most — what will you hold going into the teen session?
Any concerns that need escalating to Nomveliso before proceeding?
Is there anything that makes you uncertain about proceeding?

Use these to go deeper than the teen's short self-assessment. Start light — identity and family before anything about pressure or performance.

Identity & Self-Understanding
If you had to describe yourself to someone who's never met you, what would you say?
What's something you're proud of right now — even if it feels small?
What do you know about your clan, totem, or family of origin — how do you feel about it?
Where or with who do you feel most like yourself?
Family & Relationships
Tell me a bit about your family — who's in your home, where do you fit in?
Who in your family has the most influence on you, and how?
How does home feel most of the time?
Who in your life do you feel most understood by?
School & the Future
What do you actually enjoy learning, or find meaningful?
When you think about your future, what comes up?
Are there things people expect of you that you're carrying right now?
What's something you wish adults understood about your life right now?
The Self-Confrontation Conversation
How would you say things have actually been going with school or effort lately?
If you can see things aren't working but keep saying "I've got it" — what do you think turning down support is actually protecting you from?
Hold this gently — it's meant to be sat with, not answered on the spot. "I don't know yet" is a completely fine response.
Coach Reflections — Teen Session
Overall impression — how did the teen show up in this session?
What stands out most from what they said — themes, tensions, anchors?
What is this teen NOT saying — what do you sense beneath the surface?
How open and engaged were they? What supported or limited that?
Anything that requires escalation to Nomveliso before proceeding?
Initial instincts about coaching focus areas (early intuition only, not a plan)

This isn't about talkative versus quiet. A quiet teen who answers briefly but stays open, elaborates when invited, and asks something back is not a flag. This is for the other thing — when short answers come with a wall, not just less to say.

Fill in during or right after a session. Use it across multiple sessions for the same teen — the pattern over time matters more than any single session.

1. Elaborates when invited
Quiet, but when gently invited to say more, gives at least a little more.
Stays at one word even when directly, kindly invited to expand — more than once.

2. Asks anything back
Doesn't ask much, but shows some curiosity at some point.
Zero curiosity the entire session — never asks anything, even when there's an opening.

3. Closes off specifically when addressed directly
Generally a bit shy or low-eye-contact throughout — consistent, not reactive.
Visibly closes off specifically right after a direct question lands.

4. Edge, irritation, or combativeness
Flat or low energy, but not sharp — no edge to the tone.
Sighing, eye-rolling, a sharp or clipped tone, pushing back with attitude.

5. Flat regardless of topic
Guarded on hard topics but has some reaction to lighter ones.
Equally flat and guarded on everything, including topics that should land.

6. No movement when you try to repair the moment
When you lighten the mood or change approach, something shifts.
Nothing changes no matter what you try — same wall throughout.
