Understanding Coaching — Before You Begin
A short orientation to help you make an informed decision
Module 1 of 5
What coaching is — and what it is not
Many people arrive at coaching expecting something it was never designed to be. Before anything else, we want you to understand the nature of the work so you can decide with confidence.
Coaching is
- A structured process of self-discovery
- A safe space to be heard and challenged
- A method for developing self-awareness
- A collaborative partnership — you do the work
- A long-term investment in identity and direction
- Grounded in your specific cultural context
Coaching is not
- Therapy or counselling
- A quick-fix or fast solution
- Advice-giving or telling you what to do
- Mentorship or tutoring
- Motivation that lasts without your participation
- Something done to you — it requires your presence
"The coach holds the space. The client does the work. The methodology holds both."
— Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ MethodologyOur approach
At Mayine, we use an indigenous-rooted approach to human development. This means we work from the belief that identity, belonging, and cultural context are not peripheral to growth — they are central to it. Our methodology is built to reflect who you are, where you come from, and where you are going.

Grades 8 – 11 · Ages 13–17Teencoaching™
Teencoaching™ is a distinct, ICF-accredited methodology developed specifically for teenagers — not adapted adult coaching. It meets adolescents in the reality of identity formation, peer dynamics, academic pressure, and the question of who they are becoming.
What Teencoaching™ works on
How teens benefit
- They develop a language for their inner world — which reduces anxiety, conflict, and confusion
- They understand how they think and learn, not just what they are supposed to know
- They begin to own their choices rather than be driven by peer pressure
- They reconnect with their heritage as a source of strength, not a limitation
- They arrive at adulthood with a stronger sense of who they are and why that matters
"A teenager who knows who they are is far harder to lose to the wrong influences."

Ages 18–30 · Early CareerYoung Adult & Career Coaching
The years between 18 and 30 are often the most disorienting of a person's life — enough freedom to make significant choices, not yet enough experience to make them confidently. Our Indi-Career Coach™ methodology supports young adults to navigate career entry, identity transitions, and the shift from academic to professional life.
What this coaching addresses
Direction
- Uncertainty about career path
- Identity beyond academic achievement
- Navigating family expectations vs. personal calling
Professional identity
- Workplace confidence and self-presentation
- Managing ambition without losing self
- Setting foundations for a values-led career
The difference between career counselling and career coaching
- Career counselling tells you what options exist. Career coaching helps you understand who you are in relation to those options.
- We do not match young adults to job descriptions — we help them build the internal foundation that makes every professional context workable.
- The work is identity-first. Clarity on who you are precedes clarity on what you should do.
Module 4 of 5
Parenting SupportCoaching for Parents
Parenting a teenager in today's world is a distinct challenge. The Indigenously Parenting Coach™ methodology supports parents not in how to control their children — but in how to understand them, communicate with them, and lead them from a place of rootedness rather than fear.
What parents gain
- A framework for understanding your teenager's inner world — their needs, fears, and identity questions
- Communication tools that reduce conflict and increase connection
- Insight into how your own upbringing shapes your current parenting patterns
- An indigenous lens on family — one that honours heritage, authority, and belonging simultaneously
- The ability to support your child's development without taking over their journey
Why it works better alongside Teencoaching™
"When a parent and a teenager are both in development, the household shifts. The coach doesn't fix the family — the family learns to hold itself differently."
— Nomveliso Mbanga Teencoaching™ MethodologyParenting coaching can run independently or in parallel with your teenager's Teencoaching™ journey. When both are active, growth compounds. The methodology was designed with this in mind.
Module 5 of 5
Coaching as a long-term investment
The most common misunderstanding about coaching is that it is a short-term solution. It is not. The value of coaching compounds over time — like any real investment, the longer you commit to the process, the greater the return.
You are investing in identity — not just behaviour
Changing a behaviour takes weeks. Building the self-awareness that makes changed behaviour sustainable takes months. That is the difference between coaching and a workshop.
The work done at 15 shows up at 25
Teenagers who develop identity clarity, emotional intelligence, and a sense of cultural rootedness carry that foundation into every decision they make as young adults. You are not paying for sessions — you are paying for the next decade.
Retreats are not holidays — they are concentrated development
Our residential retreats create the immersive conditions that group and individual sessions cannot replicate. Breakthroughs happen when teenagers are out of their daily environment and fully present in a structured process.
What quick fixes actually cost
Crisis management — when a teenager has reached breaking point — is always more expensive than developmental investment earlier. Coaching during the formative years is prevention. It is the work that makes the crisis less likely.
This is generational work
When a young person understands themselves — their identity, their intelligence, their roots — they parent differently one day. The work you invest in your child now echoes forward in ways that cannot be measured in a single school term.
You have completed the orientation.
You now have a clearer picture of what coaching is, what it demands, and what it offers. If you are ready to explore working with Mayine Development Institute, the next step is booking a discovery call.
